App State: The Upset Kings
September 1st, 2007 – That’s when the FCS Appalachian State Football program put itself on the map with a major upset against the No. 5 FBS Michigan Wolverines at “The Big House”. Yes, that’s right, we said FCS! Sports Illustrated declared that game “The Greatest Upset of Them All! ESPN reported in 2008 that App State was the first FCS program to get votes in the AP college football poll, with the team receiving 5 votes. App State was also the first FCS program to defeat a ranked FBS opponent. In 2014 the Mountaineers received an invitation to the Sunbelt Conference in the FBS division. The team has had a lot of success over the years and had an additional upset against #6 Texas A&M in 2022.
On Saturday, Wyoming looks to continue its 9-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. The Mountaineers made the trip to Laramie in 2004, where the Cowboys defeated the FCS team 53-7. However, in 2015 FBS App hosted and defeated Wyoming 31-13.
Similar Starts and Similar Records
Both teams started the season 2-0, and both teams lost to ranked opponents last week, giving each team an equal record of 2-1. However, Wyoming did defeat a ranked opponent in week 1. Saturday’s game is expected to be a dogfight, yet one thing that we still don’t know is who the starting quarterback for Wyoming will be. Wyoming Head Coach Craig Bohl stated that QB Andrew Peasley is listed as “day to day.” Regardless of who the quarterback will be for Wyoming, we should expect to see another outstanding defensive performance. Another expectation will be a strong offensive line performance that will make the lanes for a successful running game. Mix some passing in there and Wyoming should have a solid game against App State. App State will play tough, but Wyoming's defense will likely put that to the test...we expect Wyoming to win this match.
