Laramie, Wyo. -- Jimmy Dales, the Wyoming Cowboy golfer, has earned his spot in the 2023 U.S. Amateur Championship after triumphing in the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Weymouth Country Club in Medina, Ohio. This will be his second appearance in the U.S. Amateur Championship, following his first stint in 2021. The tournament will take place from August 14-20, 2023 at Cherry Hills Country Club and Colorado Golf Club.
Hailing from Northville, Michigan, Dales tied for first place with Drew Salyers of Indiana University at the qualifier, outperforming a competitive field of 81 amateur golfers. Both Dales and Salyers fired rounds of 133 (-11), distancing themselves by five strokes from the next closest competitors.
Speaking on his performance, Dales said, “I was making putts and I was hitting my driver well. I played the par fives really well. I caught fire early and then was able to keep hitting fairways and greens and kept it going all day.”
Dales also believes his experience from the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship will lend him a competitive edge. “To have the experience of knowing what to expect, I think will help me the second time around,” he said.

University of Wyoming Director of Golf, Joe Jensen, lauded Dales' achievement, saying, “Jimmy is a very capable player and he won his qualifier by a good margin. To have the U.S. Am in Denver and to have a Wyoming player as part of the U.S. Am is a big deal for our program."
This year's U.S. Amateur Championship will mark its 123rd iteration, with a record 8,253 entries into the qualifying tournaments. The original field will be whittled down to just 312 individuals by the end of all qualifiers on July 27.
The tournament format consists of two 18-hole rounds of stroke play, followed by rounds of match play for the top 64 golfers. The quarterfinal matches will take place on Friday, August 18, followed by the semifinals on August 19, culminating in a 36-hole match for the championship on August 20.
Television coverage of the event will begin with the round of 64 match-play events on Wednesday, Aug. 16 and continue through the quarterfinal round on Friday, Aug. 18 on Peacock and the Golf Channel. The semifinals and the championship match will be televised on the Golf Channel and NBC over the weekend.
Among the former winners of the U.S. Amateur are some of the most iconic names in golf, including Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods, giving a glimpse into the historic significance of this esteemed championship. As Dales steps onto the course in August, he will be walking in the footsteps of these golfing legends, representing not just himself, but also the University of Wyoming and the entire state.
