Laramie, Wyo. - The Wyoming Cowboys are set to face North Texas on Saturday, but let’s assess their season so far. Wyoming enters this game with an 0-3 record, their worst start since 2015, when they finished 2-10. The Cowboys have lost to Arizona State (48-7), Idaho (17-10), and BYU (34-14). In each game, they have been outscored in the first half, 61-17, with most of these points coming in the opener against the Sun Devils (27-0). Wyoming allowed 24 first-half points in the following games, with Idaho scoring seven and BYU 17.
Season Overview
Defense
Through the first three weeks, the Cowboys' defense has given up 99 points, ranking 97th in the FBS, tied with Tulsa. They have allowed 1,182 yards. On third downs, Wyoming ranks 25th nationally, allowing opponents to convert 11 of 39 attempts. However, they rank 110th in fourth-down defense, with opponents converting 6 of 8 attempts. Despite some strong moments, the defense has faced significant challenges.
Offense
The Cowboys' offense has struggled, scoring just 24 points this season. They have faced two Big 12 teams, which might finish in the middle of their conference standings. Wyoming aims to boost its scoring against North Texas, which ranks 126th in the FBS and has allowed 16 touchdowns in three games.
The Cowboys’ rushing game is ranked 119th, tied with Florida Atlantic, with 261 rushing yards and an average of 87 yards per game. Evan Svoboda leads the team with two rushing touchdowns, while DJ Jones is the top rusher with 48 carries for 140 yards.
In passing, Svoboda has a QBR of 21.5, completing 30 of 70 passes. He has thrown one touchdown pass to Devin Boddie Jr. and has been intercepted three times, totaling 308 passing yards. If Svoboda can find his rhythm, he could become a key player for the team.
Overall
The Cowboys have lost some games that were expected to be losses. Additionally, the team is adjusting to new leadership with head coach Jay Sawvel and offensive coordinator Jay Johnson, following Tim Polasek’s departure to North Dakota State. With these changes, the team is adapting to a new system. Currently, the Cowboys would be rated a C on a grading scale. They have much to prove, starting with their game against North Texas on Saturday.
