LAS VEGAS, Nev. (March 10, 2024) – A pair of Wyoming Cowgirls received All-Mountain West honors Sunday morning, as announced by the league office. Allyson Fertig was named to the All-Mountain West Team while Emily Mellema was selected the MW All-Defensive Team.

Fertig was named to the All-MW Team for the second time during her career. She becomes the first Cowgirls since Liv Roberts in 2016-17 and 2017-18 to be named to the all-conference squad in consecutive seasons. Fertig was eighth in the league in scoring this season at 13.2 points per game while her 8.5 rebounds a contest were third. Fertig shot an incredible 61.1-percent (96-157) from the field this season to lead the league. Defensively, Fertig was eighth in the conference with 19 blocks.

In conference action, Fertig scored in double figures in 14 contests and had seven games with 10-or-more rebounds. She also had seven double-doubles during league play, including three straight to end the regular season and four of the last five games.

Mellema marks the fourth consecutive season that a Cowgirl has been named to the All-Defensive Team and the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. Mellema led the Cowgirls with 22 steals on defense this season and was the spearhead of the league's No. 1 scoring defense as Wyoming allowed just 57.4 points per game during MW action. Against three of the league’s top four scorers, Mellema held her defensive assignment to an average of nine points per game fewer, than what they averaged during the regular season, in six total contests versus those opponents. In two games against the MW’s top scorer, Mellema held her opponent to just 8-of-27 shooting. In two contests against the league’s fourth-ranked scorer, Mellema held her in check to 4-of-15 shooting.

Mellema also averaged 10.4 points per game and was second on the team with 50 assists during league play. She was second on the team with 21 made 3-pointers and third with 23 made free throws. Mellema had eight games where she scored 10-plus points and seven contests with four-or-more assists.

Fertig, Mellema and the rest of the Cowgirls open play at the Mountain West Basketball Championship Monday night at 8:30 p.m., Mountain Time.
