Las Vegas, July 19, 2023 – In an announcement during the Mountain West Conference Media Days held in Las Vegas, five players from the Wyoming Cowboys were selected for the Preseason Mountain West First Team. This notable achievement was led by junior linebacker Easton Gibbs, who was recognized as the MWC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Joining Gibbs on the Mountain West First Team were junior defensive tackle Jordan Bertagnole, graduate offensive tackle Frank Crum, junior defensive end DeVonne Harris, and junior place-kicker John Hoyland. The Cowboys' five selections were more "selections per team" than all other teams in the conference, with Air Force, Colorado State, and San Diego State each garnering only four selections each.

Gibbs and Hoyland are not new to such recognition; both were First Team All-Mountain West selections at the conclusion of the 2022 season, as determined by the Mountain West head coaches and media. Harris also received accolades, having been named a 2022 Honorable Mention All-Mountain West honoree.

Gathering these high honors seems to be the new normal for Wyoming Football. Gibbs is the first Mountain West Preseason Defensive Player of the Year since former Cowboy safety Andrew Wingard received the honor ahead of the 2017 and 2018 seasons. The last Cowboy to receive any of the Preseason Player of the Year honors was former place-kicker Cooper Rothe, who was named the Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year prior to the 2019 season.
