It was November 12th, 2022, and Wyoming was celebrating their 14 to 13 win against the Colorado State Rams at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado. The players circled around the South end zone hoisting the Bronze Boot and singing Cowboy Joe with a large contingent of Wyoming fans. Excitement was in the air! Yet, we couldn’t help but notice that nose tackle Cole Godbout was outside of the circle looking in. Cole’s face wasn’t lit up with excitement like the other players on the field. Sure, Cole gave a high-five to his teammates and clapped during the song. “It’s definitely tough…It’s just really hard to watch. I wanted to see my guys succeed, but to not be a part of that and not be participating, it was just tough,” Godbout said.

In 2022 Godbout had a great start to the season amassing 32 tackles, 10 quarterback hurries, and 4.5 tackles for loss in the first 6 games of the season. During the San Jose State game in Laramie, Cole injured his right foot, an injury that sidelined him for the final 6 games season. Then there was the Barstool Arizona Bowl in Tucson, Arizona against the Ohio State Bobcats. Much to the surprise of fans everywhere, Cole took to the field. Coles’s performance was short-lived, as he limped back to the sidelines during the middle of the game. “I pushed it a little bit, I suffered for it in the end.” “…My mindset at the time was to just get back and contribute to the team.” Godbout said. Godbout told us that he strained something in his leg. “It’s alright, I’m good now,” Godbout continued.

Before the 2023 season even began... Godbout was snubbed for some preseason awards and watchlists, adding further salt to his wounds and maybe making the chip on his shoulder bigger. Godbout had a little something to say about the snubs: “It puts a little chip on my shoulder, but I’m here for my team…I’m just going to put my head down and work hard”.

There’s no doubt that Godbout and the Wyoming Cowboys will be ready to take on the Colorado State Rams for the 115th time at War Memorial Stadium on Friday night. It’s also not far-fetched to say that each member of the Cowboys will come into the game with a chip on his shoulder after suffering back-to-back losses against conference foes Air Force and Boise State. Wyoming’s undefeated record at home this year offers some reassurance that Wyoming can get the ship sailing correctly and finish out the year strong.
