Wyoming head football coach Jay Sawvel addressed the media on Monday following a week off, as his team prepares to face San Diego State University this Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. "We're getting into the middle of [the] season. ...We need to get playing again, and we're excited to play this week," Sawvel said.
Sawvell spoke about the challenges posed by San Diego State, which is coming off a conference win. He had high praise for their head coach, Sean Lewis, stating that SDSU got a really good head coach in Sean Lewis. “I'm from Ohio; when you win at Kent State, you're a good coach." Saturday's matchup won't be the first time Sean Lewis has faced the Pokes. He faced the Cowboys in the 2021 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho. Wyoming came away the victor beating Kent State 52-38 in the contest.
Sawvel highlighted key players for San Diego State, including running back Marquez Cooper, who he noted is "averaging 25 carries a game." He pointed to wide receiver Louis Brown as "a big play wide receiver" and a significant threat for Wyoming's defense. Their quarterback Danny O'neil, according to Sawvel, is "completing 63% of his passes and is... off to a good start so far this year." Additionally, outside linebacker Trey White, with "9 sacks and 12 tackles for loss," will be a major defensive challenge for Wyoming.
"We're looking forward to playing a home game on Saturday... and we need to try to build off of what we finished the last game with as a team."
