Here is a summary of Jay Sawvel's latest press conference. Some information below may be the result of reporter corps questions.

Saturday Scrimmage

  • Scrimmage Overview: Sawvel mentioned that the team had about 115 reps during the scrimmage last Saturday, not including special teams plays. The team came out of it mostly healthy, with only minor bumps and bruises.

  • Offensive Improvement: He noted that the offense was sharper in this scrimmage than the previous one. DJ Jones made a significant impact with a 50-yard run.

  • Special Teams: Sawvel highlighted that they got a lot of special team work done during the scrimmage.

Player Performances

  • Ethan Day: Sawvel praised Ethan Day, noting that Day’s performance has been so strong that it's sometimes hard to distinguish between him and other key players like Braden Siders on film. He spoke about Day’s work ethic and physical development, stating that Day will definitely be playing for the Pokes

  • Sam Scott: Sawvel mentioned that Scott had some good runs during the scrimmage and noted other positive contributions from players like Jaylen Bean and Tyler King.

  • Sebastian Harsh: Sawvel expects Harsh to be a breakout player this season, praising his work ethic, speed, and overall play. He believes Harsh is on track to become an all-conference player.

  • Micah Young: Young plays a crucial role primarily on special teams and is currently the fifth or sixth linebacker. Sawvel expressed confidence in Young’s ability to step up if needed.

  • Devin Boddie Jr.: Sawvel expects Boddie's role to expand, especially with other players like Ayir Asante not currently available. He had a strong practice and is expected to contribute more.

General Observations

  • Team Readiness: Sawvel feels that the team is largely set at most positions, including left tackle, where Nate Geiger is expected to start. He mentioned that the team will play multiple people on both sides of the ball and that depth is crucial.

  • Injuries: Sawvel discussed managing McNeely's recovery. McNeely is ahead of schedule, but Sawvel is cautious to ensure he’s fully ready for the season.
