Offensive tackle Frank “The Tank” Crum took time out of his busy schedule to speak with us before the upcoming NFL Draft. Standing at 6 feet, 8 inches tall, and weighing 313 pounds, Frank is a gentle giant who is an imposing force for any opponent on the field. In March, Crum was one of two University of Wyoming players who were invited to attend the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The Laramie native is a fan favorite, he’s also a favorite of the media with his humor and seriousness.  As a true leader on the field, he will surely make a difference no matter where he ends up in this year’s NFL Draft. At Wyoming, Crum started 49 of 56 games during his career. Frank began his career as a right tackle but changed to the left tackle spot in 2023. Crum was a third-generation Wyoming Cowboy footballer, following in the footsteps of his father Gary Crum, and his grandfather Earl Crum.

How have things been since the NFL Combine and NFL Pro Day in Laramie?

We asked Crum what has been up to since Wyoming’s Pro Day, "I've been doing a good bit of zooms with a multitude of teams." Frank also mentioned engaging in discussions with O-line coaches and scouts.  He revealed, "Staying on top of my technique and staying in shape is what I've been up to." Shortly after the draft, Crum will need to travel to attend a rookie minicamp, "So I gotta be ready to play ball here in a short time."

On choosing football over basketball

Crum opened up about his transition from high school basketball to college football with a sense of certainty. When questioned about his feelings regarding his decision Crum stated, "No doubt! I really enjoyed basketball and track and all that in high school, but I knew my calling was football." Reinforcing his belief in his path, he elaborated, "Yeah, I've enjoyed it, I don't have any regrets playing football."

Crum and his family are no strangers to drafts

Frank Crum, shared a personal connection to retired NBA player Adam Morrison, who is his first cousin. Reflecting on Morrison's basketball career, Crum expressed admiration, recounting, "He was a standout in college [Gonzaga] and was drafted third overall in 2006 he was just that and definitely a guy I looked up to as a kid." Despite the geographical distance separating them, Crum spoke fondly of their bond, mentioning, "We've grown a relationship once I got older and spent some summers together, so I’m lucky to have him as a family member… that's for sure." Morrison has attended many of Frank’s games to show support, "He has been really supportive…and has been to some games," highlighting their shared moments of celebration on the football field, particularly during a memorable double-overtime victory against Texas Tech in Laramie. Frank has been leaning on Adam's draft expertise, making his guidance invaluable as he navigates the NFL draft process. Additionally, Frank’s father Gary Crum (Wyoming) was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 1982 NFL draft as the 24th pick in the 11th round. Gary played one year for the Dolphins before taking a college coaching job. Frank’s grandfather Earl Crum (Wyoming) was a member of the Green Bay Packers following his service in the military during the 1940’s. Earl's contract with the Packers was $100 per game and a job in the meat packing plant per Gary Crum.

Favorite Memories

When asked about his favorite memory while playing for the University of Wyoming, Frank Crum reminisced about the moments that defined his collegiate football career. Crum expressed, "Yeah, I don't know if I could pin it down to one.” He recounted his first pregame entry onto the War Memorial Stadium turf during his freshman year, remarking, "Probably the first time running out on War Memorial my freshman year… I'll never forget that moment." Among the games that held significant meaning for him were matchups against Colorado State, Missouri, and Texas Tech, each carrying its unique importance. Crum also highlighted the emotional weight of his final game on the field, noting, "I'll never forget my last game out there as well, which was extremely memorable." These moments will certainly be something that Crum will always remember.

Looking ahead to the NFL Draft

As the NFL Draft approaches, Frank Crum shares his insights. Crum said, "The draft's not the destination….it's a huge goal. Once the opportunity’s presented, I gotta go take it…longevity in the league is what matters." Frank noted that he’s done all he can do, and it’s more of a waiting game at this point, "So at this point, everything for the draft, that tape that they evaluated, the character judgment, the combine, the pro day, that's all behind me and I can't change any of that." While admitting to slight nerves regarding the unknown, he expressed more excitement than nervousness, stating, "I'm more excited to keep refining my game and get ready to go to a rookie minicamp.  “I'm more excited than nervous, that's for sure."
