Wyoming's Thrilling Victory in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl: A Farewell to Coach Bohl

Tucson, Arizona - In a nail-biting showdown at the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl, the Wyoming Cowboys orchestrated a stunning comeback against the Toledo Rockets, securing a memorable 16-15 victory. The game, marked by intense plays and strategic moves, was not only a fitting farewell for the retiring Head Coach Craig Bohl but also a testament to the resilience and determination of the Wyoming football team.

 

The first quarter set the stage for a hard-fought battle, with Wyoming deferring after winning the toss. Toledo's initial drive was thwarted by Wyoming's staunch defense, resulting in a punt that pinned Wyoming at their own 6-yard line. However, quarterback Andrew Peasley showcased his "tough as boot leather" fortitude, leading a strong drive culminating in a 34-yard field goal by John Hoyland, giving Wyoming an early 3-0 lead.

As the second quarter unfolded, Wyoming faced adversity but remained resilient. Despite a stalled drive, Hoyland delivered a remarkable 52-yard field goal, extending Wyoming's lead to 6-0. Toledo, determined to respond, orchestrated a noteworthy drive, featuring a standout 23-yard pass and a successful 33-yard field goal by Luke Pawlak. The highlight of the quarter came from Toledo's Jacquez Stuart, who sprinted for an 80-yard rushing touchdown, shifting the lead to Toledo at 10-6.

 

Wyoming had multiple opportunities to respond, but Toledo's defense held firm, leaving the score at 10-6 as the second quarter concluded. The third quarter witnessed a safety scored by Toledo, pushing the score to 12-6 in favor of the Rockets. Despite Wyoming's efforts, Toledo extended their lead to 15-6 before the quarter's end, intensifying the game.

The thrilling fourth quarter showcased Wyoming's remarkable comeback. Facing a challenging situation on their own 50-yard line, Wyoming's offense, led by Peasley and supported by runningback Harrison Waylee, orchestrated a series of plays culminating in an impressive touchdown by second-string quarterback Evan Svoboda, narrowing the score to 15-13. Wyoming's defense halted Toledo's subsequent drive, providing an opportunity for a game-winning play.

In a dramatic finish, Wyoming strategically moved down the field in the closing seconds. The stage was set for a pivotal moment, and John Hoyland delivered with a successful 24-yard field goal as time expired. The jubilant celebration that ensued marked not only a victory in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl but also a fitting end to Coach Bohl's illustrious career.

Postgame, Coach Bohl expressed gratitude for the invitation to the Arizona Bowl and commended both teams for a great game. Reflecting on the victory, he emphasized the importance of winning the kicking game and congratulated Toledo on their phenomenal year. Bohl acknowledged the challenges both teams faced and praised his players for their special efforts, closing out his career with a memorable win.

Bohl concluded his career as the longest-serving head coach in Wyoming Football history, completing an impressive tenure spanning 10 seasons. His college coaching career boasts a remarkable record of 165-92 (.642), with a Wyoming record of 61-60 (.504). Bohl ranks No. 13 among all current active NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) head coaches in terms of wins, underlining his enduring impact on the sport.

 

The statistical leaders of the game showcased outstanding performances by key Wyoming players. Quarterback Andrew Peasley led the passing attack with an impressive 20 completions on 25 attempts, accumulating 168 yards with a completion rate of 80%. Evan Svoboda contributed with one completion on two attempts, adding 16 yards to Wyoming's passing total.

In the receiving department, Wyatt Wieland led the way with 5 receptions for 55 yards, showcasing his reliability. John Michael Gyllenborg and Treyton Welch also made notable contributions with 4 receptions each. The efficient passing game was complemented by the rushing efforts, where Harrison Waylee led the pack with 91 yards on 18 attempts, averaging an impressive 5.1 yards per carry. Evan Svoboda also made his mark with 26 yards and a crucial touchdown.

On the defensive side, standout performances included Shae Suiaunoa, Easton Gibbs, and Cole Godbout, each contributing significantly to Wyoming's defensive efforts. Suiaunoa led the team with five total tackles, three of which were solo tackles. Defensive linemen Sabastian Harsh and Tyce Westland made impactful plays, with Harsh recording a sack and Westland adding a tackle for loss.

 

As the Wyoming Cowboys celebrate their victory in the 2023 Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl, the victory serves as a fitting farewell to Coach Craig Bohl.
